I m fairly new to the hobby and have seen a lot of different options on cars I could get I really think I ultimately want to get a 4x4 brushless car that runs on a LiPo and I ve seen a few routes I could go The Traxxas Slash seems to be a popular option and is easily upgradable That said ofcourse you need a 4x4 to get into the highlands which I highly recommend But other than that 4x4 is only there to give you an advantage when you need to climb go through places with low traction Also a heavier a car is the more you will need 4x4 to climb a steep slippery uphill Other than that it s completely unnecessary
The car we got was about 20 years old and very high mileage 200KM There were stains on the seats and there was certainly wear and tear forgivable Worked more or less fine enough though until our second to last day when the clutch suddenly SNAPPED on a hill leaving Selfoss one hour from Reykjavik For car rental I recommend SafariCarRental They are a local company based in Windhoek and rent out 4x4 Toyotas fully equipped with camping gear if needed For tar roads you don t need a 4x4 but for gravel roads and worse I would highy recommend it
