Inspired by the ingenious beauty of Japanese wood joinery a Bee Home is built by layering floors around a central spine creating an interlocking Jenga like structure that requires no additional building materials like glue or toxic adhesives which can be harmful to the bees and the environment A hive in the bee house This three deep hive is opened into the interior of the bee house Each of the doors is screened and can be kept closed while the beekeeper is working on a different box The bees access the feeder from underneath and the varroa board is under the bottom box Before the beekeeper leaves he replaces the screen doors and closes the large outer door over the bees
Help support native bees by building them homes from upcycled materials Making a DIY Native Bee Home is a fun project that helps provide habitat for our native pollinators Solitary bees often nest in hollow stems or tunnels they find in their habitat 1 Open Back Side If the back of the bee house is open parasites can enter from that direction The tubes should have a wall on the back part of the bee house 2 Unremovable Tubes and Blocks It s likely a convenience for the maker of the bee house but gluing the tubes together prevents the owner of the bee house from removing them

To keep the stems and canes dry from rain make them 3 cm shorter than the cylinder use sharp garden clippers to trim them Bees can t burrow through the knots in bamboo so avoid canes with too many knots Use sandpaper to smooth the ends of the bamboo or stems if uneven Bees will be put off by sharp edges barring entry to the holes Avoid bamboo and plastic It doesn t allow moisture to dissipate and humidity invites larvae pupae to rot Avoid glued in nesting For similar reasons as above don t buy houses that have blocks and reeds glued in It doesn t allow for you to add fresh materials in the spring and invites mites that kill off bee larvae
